12/10 — From Natural to Spiritual: Offering Our Whole Life to God
"I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship." (Romans 12:1, ESV)
"For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want." (Galatians 5:17, NIV)
God’s design calls for integration, not division, between the natural and the spiritual aspects of a believer’s life. While sin introduced conflict where obedience was once intended, the Christian journey involves offering the whole self—the physical body, natural desires, and everyday actions—as a living sacrifice to God. This is far more than a ritual; it is the heart of true worship and sanctification.
In Romans 12:1 Paul urges believers to dedicate their entire being to God. This counters any attempt to compartmentalize faith, as though the spiritual exists only in isolated moments or settings. Our natural life—our emotions, thoughts, and physical habits—must be submitted and transformed through the Spirit’s power. To avoid damaging internal conflict, the natural impulses that oppose God’s will must be willingly disciplined and redirected.
Galatians 5:17 reminds us that flesh and Spirit are often in opposition. Yet through Christ, this struggle is not hopeless. Rather, it calls for daily commitment to put to death what harms spiritual growth and to nurture the new life born of the Spirit. Like Abraham offering up Ishmael before Isaac, believers often face the necessary process of surrendering natural inclinations before fully embracing God’s spiritual promises.
This process of self-discipline is not about legalistic moralism but about wise stewardship of the life God has given. When believers consciously obey, even at the cost of sacrificing comfort or habitual patterns, God blesses the yielding with renewal and fruitful living. God does not reject the natural but fulfills it when it is united to His purpose.
Therefore, sanctification calls for deliberate, ongoing dedication—spirit, soul, and body—to God’s lordship. To grow into Christlikeness, believers put to death the old self and put on the new (Ephesians 4:22-24), experiencing holiness not as a burden but as life’s deepest restoration.
Proverbs 11:30 "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and whoever captures souls is wise."
Proverbs 15:32 "Whoever ignores instruction despises himself, but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence."
Psalm 90:12 "So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom."
Psalm 119:105 "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
Lord Jesus, help me not to withhold any part of myself from Your transforming work. Teach me to lay down my natural desires willingly and to walk in the new life You have given. Keep my heart fixed on Your will and strengthen me to live fully for You, body and spirit united. Amen.
